Effective anti-aging serum: 5 criteria for making the right choice (and verifying it)

Sérum Exosomes + Niacinamide YDRA 30 ml en gros plan avec fleurs de pommier

All serums promise to be "effective". But what does an effective anti-aging serum actually look like? It's not the one with the most active ingredients or the highest price. It's a product with a coherent formula, suited to your skin, that you use regularly. Here is a simple guide to judging a serum before buying it, and to find out if yours is doing its job.

What "effective" means in cosmetics

A cosmetic product acts on the skin's appearance: hydration, radiance, the appearance of fine lines, comfort. It does not treat the skin or replace the advice of a healthcare professional. An effective serum is therefore one that, when used correctly for several weeks, helps improve these aspects for most skin types, without causing irritation. Results vary from person to person.

The 5 criteria for judging a serum

Criterion What to check
1. Active ingredients A few well-chosen active ingredients are better than a long list. Check that they are actually in the INCI list.
2. Their position in the INCI The list goes from the most abundant to the least abundant ingredient. A featured active ingredient listed at the very end is present in a small amount.
3. Texture Light and fast-absorbing: this encourages regular use.
4. Tolerance A short formula, fragrance-free if your skin is reactive.
5. Transparency Full INCI list published, manufacturer and responsible person in the European Union indicated.

Active ingredients to know (and what to expect from them)

  • Niacinamide (vitamin B3): helps improve the appearance of the complexion and skin texture, supports the skin barrier. See our guide to niacinamide.
  • Hyaluronic acid: hydration and comfort, for a more plump-looking skin.
  • Peptides: help improve the appearance of firmness and elasticity. See peptides in cosmetics.
  • Plant exosomes: a recent active ingredient in cosmetics; always check its origin and the full composition. See what are exosomes?
  • Plant-based retinol alternative (Bidens pilosa): to refine the appearance of skin texture, without retinol. See the retinol alternative.

The 5 mistakes that make a serum less effective

  1. Changing products too quickly. Allow at least 4 weeks of regular use before judging.
  2. Applying it to skin that hasn't been properly cleansed or, conversely, has been over-stripped.
  3. Using too much. 2 to 3 drops are enough for the face and neck.
  4. Forgetting sunscreen in the morning. It also protects the complexion and the appearance of fine lines.
  5. Combining several new active ingredients at once: introduce only one new product at a time.

Example: reading the INCI of a serum

Take our Exosome + Niacinamide Serum. Its ingredient list starts with water and a light emollient, then lists niacinamide in third place, before glycerin. It also contains apple-extract-infused exosomes, Lactobacillus ferments, lactic acid, hyaluronic acid, and Centella asiatica. It does not contain fragrance according to its list, and it is vegan. You can check everything yourself on its product page: that is the principle of a transparent list.

For a plant-based retinol alternative, our Retinol Alternative Serum contains 2% Bidens pilosa extract, with aloe vera juice and hyaluronic acid. It has a light fragrance of rose and geranium.

How to know if your serum is working?

  • After 2 to 4 weeks, does your skin feel more comfortable, more hydrated?
  • Does your complexion look more even in daylight?
  • Is the product well tolerated (no tightness or redness)?

If your skin feels tight or turns red, space out the applications or stop, and ask a healthcare professional for advice. Take a photo of your face in the same light every 2 weeks: it is more reliable than memory.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most effective anti-aging serum?

There is no universal answer: the most effective one is the one that suits your skin, that you tolerate well, and that you use every day.

Do you need a very expensive serum for it to be effective?

No. Price does not guarantee quality. Look at the formula (INCI), tolerance, and regularity of use.

Can you combine several serums?

Yes, but introduce them one by one, starting with the lightest. See the order of skincare.

Morning or evening?

Both are possible for a light serum. In the morning, finish with sunscreen.

How long does it take to see an effect?

Allow at least 4 weeks of regular use. Results vary from person to person.
